In a trailer for Hypernormalization, Adam Curtis claimed that our real job is shopping and consuming. When I originally heard it, I didn’t completely understand it. I knew there was something to it but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
Now, months later, reading an article I was supposed to read for an event I hosted weeks ago, I read something that opened up those words of Curtis:
“Under capitalism all one needs for full entitlement to luxury is enough ownership of the means of production.”
Essentially, the products we are producing which the wealthy own is our money. The more we spend, the more money the wealthy have. It is no longer necessarily that they need to own, per se, a certain amount of companies or pay people a certain amount. Those things are important too, but the majority of wealth in our time is gained from money being moved around and spent.
